Question about targeting and receiving a lead under the budget price I set

Just received another lead for a wedding to photograph almost a year a way... They are looking for a photographer for 6 hours and their budget is set at $500-1,000... On my service tab for a 6 hour wedding is over their budget, why would I have to pay for this lead if I set up my targeting price higher than their max budget? This has happened quite a few times over the past two months for large wedding leads and not my normal portrait leads... This costs me a lot in my weekly budget for weddings that will read my lead, but not respond... Does anyone have a solution or an answer to help me not lose hundreds a dollars a month on bogus leads who are coming to the site to price shop...

You will not get the answer you are hoping for im afraid. I'm sure by the time you read this you will have already gotten your answer. Did it help? Thumbtack has gotten greedy recently and has nothing to say but empty words that make it sound like it's set up better for us pros. It isn't what it used to be.

I was so glad to see your question. I essentially have the same question, as this recently happened to me as well. Even the details are similar, except it was a 7 hour wedding. All the same, the lead's budget was below what I charged.

Not only was I automatically charged, I was charged based on the what I bill, not on the lead's budget. I didn't understand TT's reasoning. Is there an assumption that, by default, leads will simply disregard their own budget?

Perhaps even more curious is that it was considered a "direct lead" to begin with. If, from the beginning, the lead is clearly indicating they're not willing to pay what I charge, how is that a direct match?

Just glad to see I'm not the only pro who finds this puzzling.

My feeling is that a lot of photographers are not using direct lead anymore because the rate increases have made it difficult, so I think they default to whoever is in your market who is still doing it, no matter what you have targeted. I have never targeted leads and just wait for a lead that is in my budget that I Choose to bid on. Not what they decide I must bid on, That is the way it use to be back three years ago. It worked great back then. It has been down hill ever since they made you pay to rank higher and direct leads.
