Exactly. I'm not going to reach out to client when I don't know what they really want done, not for the amount it is costing. We need an accurate word count, not a range. And a page count is possible but need to know if it's double or single spaced. I have to put all this in my message. It's a guessing and gambling game now.
Yes, despite my decision not to quote any more because it's too expensive and I've gone from a Top Pro to an editor who can't land a job, I did just quote on a fiction manuscript, again not sure what the word count is so I had to ask specifically. He may come back with the exact number of words and then I will be charged $39 even though I never hear from him again.
Editing entails other works aside from "fiction." Also needed to be added are non-fiction and academic works. In additon, typically editors work off of number of words rather than number of pages.
It would be great if you could forward the above suggestions to the team who is working on services to be provided on Thumbtack.
I gave my specialist all sorts of feedback last week, and she said she'd pass it along to the team handling this. In the conversation, there were two things that stood out to make me feel not particularly reassured.
First - the combining of writing and editing was done to simplify things for the customers who were getting asked too many questions to set up a job request. Instead of coming up with better drill down questions to ensure customer requests get to the right pros, most of the details of writing (and editing) jobs were stripped out. When trying to explain the need for more specifics, my specialist really couldn't understand. Even after I provided concrete examples, this didn't really get across. The specificity necessary in writing and editing gigs seems incompatible with the new Thumbtack model.
Second - my specialist told me that they were collecting feedback and she'd get my info to the appropriate folks, but she mentioned that the transparent price issue was the highest priority, so we would probably see that first. She didn't have a roll out date for that and said it could be a few months before it kicks in.
If Thumbtack was your primary source of job lead generation prior to mid-June, and it's no longer working for you, you're not alone in this situation. Any changes that will make it work again won't happen for a while. I do still check in to the system once a day, but the current system is not worth devoting much effort to, and I'm registering with other platforms to ensure I can keep my business afloat.
Good news! I'm back with an update! The team has made changes based on your feedback!
Here's what you'll now see:
-The category has been renamed as "Writing and Editing Services"
-The "type of work" question has been cleaned up to distinguish between the types of writing and editing services one might want
-For editing, we now ask two questions: one for the type of editing services needed (substantive or developmental editing, formatting and fact checking, copyediting, proofreading) and one for the type of document to be edited (fiction manuscripts, non-fiction manuscripts, academic papers and journals, scientific/medical papers and journals)
-For writing, we now ask about the type of writing needed (web copy, blog writing, corporate copy, speech writing, grant writing, ghostwriting, business plan writing, press release writing, technical writing, and others)
I hope this helps address many of your concerns! Thank you again for raising them!
