Why am I getting leads from all over the country and not locally? Need more info on targeting I guess. I have set my targeted preferences but the leads I get are not local. All over the country.😮🤔 I got one hire FAR AWAY — YAY! and she’s sending me the work to do but this may not happen each time. One lead I responded to said she didn’t realize I was out of town (not sure how that happens when my address is in my profile) so she decided to to get somebody else. Ugh. I got charged for that one. Not happy. Need help please! I’m new

Thanks for bringing up this concern.
If you are getting exact matches with customers that are not within your preferred travel area, I would definitely recommend going back through your travel preferences for each service. There a two ways to set your travel preferences - specific areas and radius. I always recommend selecting the specific areas you want to target over radius. This ensures you know exactly where you would be traveling to.
Even with targeting your preferences there still may be times that you receive leads outside of your preferences. These would be partial matches and though they aren't a perfect match, we want to give you that opportunity to review the request and make that decision on whether you want to respond. Partial matches are not auto charged, so you would only pay for these if you decide to accept it.
I also want to mention that in looking over your account, I noticed that your Jobs tab distance filter was set to 150 miles. The jobs tab distance tool is separate from your targeting travel preferences, but could be causing you to receive job opportunites from areas that are not relevant to you.

@Jupiter I have a few questions on how Targetting works
1) When the job poster submits their request, is that lead automatically sent to the Pros whose set preferences match the request?
2) The notification that comes with the lead (in the inbox) shows how many Pros were contacted. Is there anyway of knowing which of these Pros were using Target and which of these Pros were contacted manually by the Job Poster? I would pose the same question for what appears in the jobs tab.
3) I have unsuccessful in receiving an answer to this question: What constitutes an area in the Thumbtack rule book? I have been told that it is "50 miles as the crow flies". I still recieve leads that are well outside this radius.
4) I am not all together clear if this item from the August edition of keeping us in the loop belongs in this thread; please bear with. "Travel preference and location preferences highlighted for customers" is something currently in development. What I am unclear about is whether or not Thumbtack plans to highlight me as a Pro outside certain areas.
Will a notification be sent that says certain customer's locations are remote and outside my preferences? Will my area be determined by a radius that originates from my address or a given town I have targetted? What constitutes an area? This phrase appears in that part of the Loop: "We learned that customers often don’t want to hire someone outside their area (even if the pro travels for work)."
