I agree with everyone else who replied!! I went from $3.33 to "who knows how much?" usually $35 and up for a "lead" in the wedding floral industry -- used to get lots of interest and bookings and proud to work hard to become a "thumbtack pro", whereas now it seems people only looking for cheapest prices. I also see lots of repeat names from other platforms I am using (the knot, wedding wire) where my marketing expense is known and can be budgeted. Besides that, I'm getting "leads" on events way outside my travel zone -- 2 hours and more from travel preferences. I don't think Michigan weddings are in my Wisconsin target market. I have stopped using thumbtack. Seems you all just got too greedy.

Back in the old days, I believe I submitted a maximum of $13.50 for a Logo design bid and roughly $8.00 for an Industrial Design, Product Design / Modeling related bid. If there was no response or the person responded and turned down the bid for one reason or the other then the bid amount was credited back to me. Now the bidding transaction is pretty much the same but the bid amount has doubled to quadrupled in price. What gives? Your service in the past has helped my business along quite well in some cases rewarding a pretty handsome compensation for my services so the comparative percentage payout was fair. I recently made a couple of bids that proceded to further corresponding and pricing and they didn't follow through due to budget constraints from the potential client or they simply held off telling me that they would get back to me later of which they never did accept one who did only to find out that I was still too expensive for his budget. That particular bid was withheld at a later date and instead of paying out the $38 for the bid I wound up paying $70 for overdraft charges due to the insufficient funds in my business account of which I had earlier if the bid was charged up to two weeks after submission. All together over the last three to four bids your new business framework has cost me well over $100 with no return earnings from either one of the potential clients. 

For a one-man band who can only handle two clients at any one time, I do not make the earings to satisfy your 20% hike in charges and have since backed off greatly from using your service. It's a shame because I really enjoyed using your site. I'm using Upwork a lot more often reluctantly because their system is set up to which I as a vendor am completely bonded to their system for all transactions and they take a flat rate 20% commission for all bidders who use their system, which is steep. The applicant goes to their site, fills out the information for the bidder and then the bidder is forced to hike their hourly or project prices way up to fulfill the bidder's range of compensation. What happens as a result is the applicant turns down the hourly or project bid because it is too high and way out of their budget. Part of the attraction of the applicant who is in need of professional services using either Thumbtack or Upwork is to find good affordable professionals to do their work for them. 

I prefer your system over Upwork's system because you give me the freedom to correspond with the client on my own. Corporate overhead is crazy high, I get it but is there any way you can find a happy medium from where you used to be and where you are now with the charges you bestow on small freelancers such as my self? There are no guarantees with the bidding process and maybe you can have a feature in your system to signal when the applicant has agreed to proceed, provide proof of payment to the bidder and the bidder has landed the job. That way if I land a $1000 project then emotionally I'm all right with giving you the $30 to $50 dollars for your commision. Otherwise, you have made it too expensive for me to carry out my business using your site.

I recently stopped using your app because your pricing went from decent to ridiculous. Then to top it off you started charging us when we didn’t get hired. You can clearly see when a customer/client hired someone else, the person who gets hired gets charged and should be. When the 10 other people that didn’t get hired get charged too that’s not right. In some cases you guys make more then we do for a single job because the amount of people that get charged for sending quotes. The final straw for me was when I was charged $15 for a job that I quoted $40. That’s nearly half of my earnings. Not only is that ridiculous it’s flat out wrong. If you guys come up with a system in which pros are only charged if they get hired, and keep that charge under 10%, I’ll come back. Until then good riddance !

Amen, brother! Thumbtack is probably answering to the great casino in the sky now (stock market investors) so they have percentages and dividends to pay out now as well as corporate overhead. The 20 to thirty bidders they charging on top of the bidder who is not quite sure he or she has landed the funds is providing them with a bloody cesspool of cash milking cow money. Become a "dot-commer" and turn in to a trillionaire overnight if you become a success, design an internet service that the little people need and you will eventually become a God. I don't know, the 20% hike has got my goat so to say. I behave and stop.

Like many other Top Pro's, we have drastically reduced our use of TT.  When we started using TT in 2014 it was a great experience. We made money, TT made money, and our customers were happy.  When TT stopped doing credits, we stayed with them and paid a  more for quality leads.  Our advertising budget is 10% of our projected sales.  With the credits we would average $5 - $10 cost for carpet cleaning jobs valued ar $60 - $150. We could personalize our pitch to every customers individual request. And we did quite well at showing why we were the best choice for their project.  Then TT raised their pricing again and our $5 bid became $30+ for one bid.  TT is now as expensive or more expensive as their competition, but their competitors actually heavily advertise (on tv and radio) in this market where TT does not.  Before you always knew what you were paying before you bid.  TT purposefully stopped being transparent on the cost of the bid, and our minimum bid cost has been $30.  Paying $30 on a chance to get a $60 - $100 job is ridiculous.  They blocked personalized templates, so that every customer receives the same message from more TT Pro's.  So we stopped using TT after they started hiding the cost.  TT then started sending us messages from customers who "chose" us from our profile and wanted to know our "next availability ".  We would reply, get charged $30+, and never hear back from the customer.  We now put our TT budget into Google ads and have seen a better return from those ads than from the current TT format. From reading the other responses, we see we are not alone. 

How can TT improve for us pros?  

1.  Bring back price transparency on all bids. We need to know the cost of a bid before we bid.

2. Reduce bid costs to 10% of the job price at the most.

3. Bring back the customized messages. These benefit both the  pro and the TT customer. 

4. Reduce the number of customers that are fishing for the lowest price, and never reply after first contact, or refund these bids.

Hey @Cleaning1, I totally get where you're coming from. 

We understand that there might have been aspects of the old system that felt better for you. We want to explain why we made the change we did. In the old system, 80 percent of customers who came to Thumbtack never ended up actually seeing any pros. Those were all jobs that could’ve been yours. But those customers left Thumbtack without ever finding the right pros. So we made changes to help customers see pros immediately and increase the chances that customers would find the right pro for the job.

As part of this change, we could no longer ask you to pay every single time your business got in front of a customer. We wanted to give you the chance to get in front of as many relevant customers as possible and only pay for leads — customers who actually engage with you.

We realize that not every lead turns into a hire. But our hope is that you make enough from the jobs you do win that it’s worth it for you to continue using Thumbtack.

Of course, we recognize that the new system isn’t perfect. That’s why your feedback is so important. So please keep it coming!
