Our goal at Thumbtack is to help customers find the right pros and hire them. We try to get you in front of lots of customers looking to hire pros like you, so you can show customers why you’re the right pro for the job. While you may not win every single job, we want you to earn enough from the jobs you win that it's worth it for you to use Thumbtack.
So how do we determine what you pay for leads? Simply put, we try to only charge you for the value that you’re getting.
We’re constantly evaluating the prices we charge and making adjustments to make them more fair. So we want to hear from you. What do you find most confusing about our pricing? What would you consider to be a fair price? What are other ways we can make using Thumbtack worth it for you?

We determine prices by looking at the details of each job. You can expect to pay more for larger jobs (like a four-bedroom house cleaning) than for smaller jobs (like a one-bedroom house cleaning). We do our best to only charge you for the value you’re getting. But sometimes we find that our prices need to be improved-- so we make adjustments.
You may have noticed that we recently made price adjustments in many categories. In some cases, we identified prices that were in fact way too high and didn’t make sense. We lowered those so they now make more sense.
We realize that not all leads always turn into hires. And we realize that’s frustrating. But remember: when a customer contacts you, that’s a customer who’s decided to reach out to you from a list of pros. It’s then up to you to win the job. And once you pay for the initial lead, you won’t pay for any follow-up jobs or referrals. Sometimes you won’t pay at all if we don’t have enough pros to meet our customers’ needs. Our ultimate goal is for you to make enough from the jobs you do win to make using Thumbtack worth it.

@waterworks thanks so much for your thoughtful post! I understand it can be frustrating when the cost of leads feels inconsistent. Let me explain some background. We only want you to pay for the value you’re getting. That’s why we look at a few things to determine a lead’s value: the type of job, its size, and how interested a customer appears. If we set the same price for every lead, we wouldn’t be taking into account that each job is different.
We’re currently hard at work improving how we price leads to make them better reflect the value you’re getting. Stay tuned for updates.
In the meantime, remember you’ll never pay when a customer’s first response is a “no thanks,” and if we don’t have enough pros to meet the needs of our customers, you might even get the lead for free.
To get a sense of what you can expect to pay for different types of jobs, look at the jobs in your Jobs tab and select Learn more to see prices.

We know it can be frustrating when it seems like customers are just price-shopping. This is why if a customer’s first message to you is a “no thanks,” we don’t charge you at all. This is also why your profile is so important. You can use it to provide all the information customers need to make a decision on whether to contact you. That way, they won’t have to contact you to find out answers to common questions or basic details.
But we realize sometimes that’s not enough, so we’re currently working on ways we can better identify how serious customers are. It’s still a work-in-progress, but it’s a priority for us. Stay tuned for updates and please keep your feedback coming so we can make improvements together.

Hey @Cleaning1, I totally get where you're coming from.
We understand that there might have been aspects of the old system that felt better for you. We want to explain why we made the change we did. In the old system, 80 percent of customers who came to Thumbtack never ended up actually seeing any pros. Those were all jobs that could’ve been yours. But those customers left Thumbtack without ever finding the right pros. So we made changes to help customers see pros immediately and increase the chances that customers would find the right pro for the job.
As part of this change, we could no longer ask you to pay every single time your business got in front of a customer. We wanted to give you the chance to get in front of as many relevant customers as possible and only pay for leads — customers who actually engage with you.
We realize that not every lead turns into a hire. But our hope is that you make enough from the jobs you do win that it’s worth it for you to continue using Thumbtack.

Thanks @Tim1, these are some great points! I get that it's frustrating to pay for a lead when the customer isn't ready to commit. You want that customer to have some skin in the game. But at the end of the day, we believe that there will be more customers on Thumbtack — and more jobs for you — if we don't put up a barrier when customers are searching for the best pro for their job. Some things you can try right now are expanding your travel area, adding to the types of jobs you do, and expanding your availability to do those jobs. Also make sure you’re always putting your best foot forward. This means having a complete profile with a professional looking headshot, adding details to your About me section, getting great reviews, and responding to leads. We hear you — it’s frustrating to not only pay for something you don’t think you should be paying for, but then have to go through the hassle of requesting a refund. We’ve been working to improve this experience for our pros.
If a customer’s first message is a “no thanks,” you won’t pay at all. We also recently make some updates so that now you automatically won’t be charged for a customer who contacts you for a second time about the same job. You shouldn’t have to pay for the same customer twice, and you shouldn’t have to contact us to get a refund in this situation. So if we detect that the same customer contacts you for a second time about the same job within a week, then we automatically won’t charge you the second time the customer contacts you. And we’re currently in the process of exploring how we can build a better system for you to immediately flag leads in the app that you don’t think you should be paying for.
In the meantime, our goal is to introduce you to customers looking to hire pros like you. So if you get a questionable lead, be sure to let us know by disputing a charge. This feedback helps us improve our technology and policies for the future. And to learn which jobs typically qualify for refunds, read our article the Help Center.

We love it when our pros give us feedback because it helps us make Thumbtack better for everyone. When pros told us that they wanted to see prices upfront before sending quotes, we worked to make that happen. When we made the update at the end of August, we announced it here in the Community (keep checking back in the Community for all of the latest product news and updates).
Now if you look at the jobs in your Jobs tab, you can see the prices you’ll pay if the customers respond to you. We’ve tried different way of showing prices, and allowing pros to click Learn more to see the prices for jobs has proven to be the best version for our pros.
We still price jobs based on the value of the job. For example, that means big jobs generally cost more than small jobs. And if our technology detects from a customer’s first message that the customer isn’t interested at all, then we don’t charge you for that contact. The goal has been (and still is) to make the price match the value of the job and the likelihood that you’ll get hired. But now, you can get a better sense of the price upfront.

I know it doesn’t feel good to pay when you don’t get hired. Let me explain more about why we don’t charge you once you’re hired. The main reason is that we don’t know when a customer hires you. We work to introduce you to as many customers as you want and once they reach out, we step back and that job is yours to win.
We realize you may not get hired by every customer who reaches out to you, and we take that into account when we price leads. Our goal is for you to make enough from the customers who do hire you that it makes sense for you to use Thumbtack.

We’re sorry to hear that our pricing for your category seems off. We have an entire team here at Thumbtack dedicated to researching individual categories so that we can price leads in these categories appropriately. But we recognize that no one understands the value of jobs like the pros working on them. Which is why we ask Thumbtack pros directly and ask that you partner with us by telling us when the prices don’t make sense. If you decline a lead be sure to tell us why, especially if it’s because of the price. This is an easy way to share feedback you have about the price of a specific lead.

We understand that it may appear that your competition has increased when we show customers more pros. But the reality is, customers want more options when they’re looking for a pro. If we don’t give them enough options, then they’re unlikely to hire anyone. And even if you don’t win a particular job, it’s our hope that you’re still winning more jobs in total. This is because while customers are seeing more pros, your business is getting in front of more customers. We ultimately want to help customers find and hire the right pros, so we give customers more options so that they can hire a Thumbtack pro to do the job.

I agree too! I liked it when it was $3.33 dollars for each gig. Now, I am getting charged more and really not making much of a profit. The customer should be charge a fee like most sites.
I agree. If they had to pay for referrals then they wouldn’t just randomly throw things up to see what they could get and for how much. I’ve have pages and pages of request that went nowhere. I’ve even gotten requests in 2018 for jobs back in 2016.
I completely agree! I wish there was funding from clients to offset things. I get the "appeal" but it's tough with lazy people.
