3 Reasons you're not getting hired on TT.jpg

If you’re not getting hired on Thumbtack, check your profile. Chances are it needs something extra to show customers why they should hire you. Here’s what you might be missing.

Reviews.

Pros with five or more reviews are on average twice as likely to be hired on Thumbtack. Customers like reviews because it gives them a picture of what you do and how you work.

Thumbtack makes it easy to ask for a review by automatically sending an email to customers when you mark yourself hired. But it doesn’t hurt to follow up. Here’s an example:

Hey Angela,

It’s me again, hope you’re great as ever! I know you’re busy, but could you write me a quick review at this link: [custom review link]? It only has to be a sentence or two, and I know my new clients will love hearing your story.

Thanks so much!

A professional headshot.

Pros with strong headshots are significantly more likely to be hired on Thumbtack. Here’s how to do it right, from Thumbtack photographer Tri Nguyen.

  1. Smile. Customers like a friendly face.
  2. Pick a bright background: Light and polished backgrounds look more professional than dark and heavy ones.
  3. Dress crisp and clean: Dress for what you do — but look fresh. Professionalism is key to a good headshot.

Here’s our step-by-step guide for taking a DIY headshot (that looks professional).

Photos and videos of your best work.

There’s a reason why people say a picture paints a thousand words. Use your photos and videos to tell a story about great work — like jobs that you’re proud of, or specialist services that you offer.  Great images build customer trust even before they hire you. Make sure the photos and videos are high quality, up to date, and that you have permission to use them.

Don’t upload something from every job, by the way. Multimedia artist Albert Benichou says, “On Thumbtack, only include the best of the best.”

Three reasons why I am not getting hired on Thumbtack

1) I don't know the budget of my clients, that option is gone

2) It cost 15-25% of my revenue and I have to compete with 14 other pros instead of 4

3) I have no idea what Thumbtack will charge me to quote the price.

Three reasons why I am not getting hired on Thumbtack

1.  Wasting time and money quoting elusive non-customers.

2.  Competing against lowball artists.

3.  See #1 above.

I'm not sure what is going on with Thumbtack. I have a roofing company located in Sarasota, FL. There was a time when Thumbtack was the best lead service I had. I was getting jobs regularly from them and the costs were low and the app was simple to use. Now, Thumbtack is one of the worst lead services I have and one of the most expensive and the app is difficult to use. I have seen less and less people inquiring on Thumbtack and when inquiries are posted I see less and less pro's are even responding to people. I get on and see a job posted and its been there for a day and nobody has responded. This tells me Thumbtack is not working well for other pros either and they are choosing not to use it or are having trouble receiving alerts for leads.

I feel the same as Josh.  I was getting a lot more leads that I could close prior to the most recent changes.  I haven't had one since the customer search.  I get more word of mouth leads, which are free.  I have a professional headshot, lots of great reviews, photos of work are not easy considering I travel to provide a service in peoples' homes.  Why should I stay?  Very important question to ask myself....

1) NOT SEEING QUOTES BEFORE THEY GET SENT AND BEING CHARGED FOR GENERIC REPLIES

2) AS @BNG1 SAID, SEEING CUSTOMER BUDGET IS GONE. WHO NEEDS TO SEE BASIC, STANDARD, PREMIUM, ETC. WE NEED TO SEE WHAT IS THEIR BUDGET

3) BEING PERSONABLE IN A MESSAGE IS GONE, UNTIL WE GET A REPLY FROM THE CUSTOMER, AND PLEASE GENERIC REPLIES AREN'T FROM INTERESTED CUSTOMER. ASK ANY PRO

WITH THAT SAID, I'VE GOT EVERYTHING THAT YOU SUGGESTED ON MY PROFILE. BUT WITH PROMOTE ON, I GET NO LEADS, CAN'T BID THE WAY I HAVE DONE BEFORE, GET CHARGED FOR GENERIC REPLIES, ETC.

MANY REPS KNOW HOW I FEEL.

Three reasons I am NO LONGER getting hired on Thumbtack

1) Prices are too high to send any adequate amount of quotes.  Before I could send out 20 quotes a month, and get five customers and that was fine.  Now, I send out five quotes, and even if I get a job, it doesn't cover my expenses.

2) Having to compete with dozens of competitors, instead of just four.  Most of them out of town,

3) Paying for tire-kickers.   Should have to pay 16 bucks for someone to kick the tires.

Now, if you are going to make someone pay that much for a lead, it should ONLY be if someone is hired, not if they merely responded to someone pushing a canned reply.

Sadly, I have been a photographer for over 25 years. When I first came on TT there were already around 95 " photographers " in my area. Now there are almost 200. I had a great word of mouth business in NY but when I came to FL in an attempt to establish business I started trying out TT. I LOVED IT !! I was busy as often as I wanted and I worked very hard to get to TOP PRO status thinking that would make a bigger difference. Well here I sit, top pro, looking back on this past year I am pretty sure it cost me MORE to quote than I have made. People starting a conversation with me and then disappearing. Some of them even telling me they want me to shoot family photos and still disappearing when I have blocked the time on my calendar. I have started delivering food with DoorDash to make money since this is no longer working and I feel like a washed up photographer grappling for a way to make a living at this point. I am disappointed in how this is working out and although I have seen many changes with TT this past year or so, I get my weekly stats and although it shows I had 60 views in a week I have NO real leads usually. Smiley Sad   Not sure what career change I will have to switch to but clearly if something here doesn't change, I will be shutting down the doors to what I have always done and loved !!

I just joined and I genuinely do not see the incentive to use Thumbtack. It seems like I would be paying more to get some minor visibility than I would actually make on the gig, IF I can land one. It looks like a pay-to-play gig and those don't turn into a career.

@musicbymicah I want Thumbtack to be a useful tool for you and your business! Do you have any questions about how it works?

@Kameron

Back in November, you said "Hey Pros,

It's been 6 months now, and many of us are still struggling for whatever reason. I know I've done everything that was asked of me, and still not getting leads, except an occasional "customer chose you". Or "are you available on my date". Those aren't quality leads, sorry to disagree. Those are just click happy Job Posters.

My question is, after 6+ months of hearing the struggles of countless Pros, what is Thumbtack doing to improve the platform to help the Pros? Seems that everytime  a change occurs, it's to help the Job Posters more than the Pros, which tells the Pros that Thumbtack cares more about the Job Posters. If I'm wrong, please show me changes that occurred after a Pro gave their suggestion and Thumbtack implemented those suggestions to improve obtaining leads for the Pros.

Thanks

Sorry but my profile is not the problem.

Ive always had a great profile with a great photo, photos and videos and tons of 5 star reviews.

None of that is the problem.

@DJStevie as we've mentioned before, not all feedback we receive will result in an update. However, there have been many changes that were implemented due to the feedback we received from pros. Kameron made a post about this a few weeks ago sharing some examples, which you can see here. You've also been active in the threads regarding our monthly updates, a lot of those updates are to help you pros. We ultimately want success for pros and we want customers to be able to come to Thumbtack to get a job done. We have to think about both sides or else, pros don't get hired and customers don't get the job done.

@Meckell

I saw those links that @Kameron posted, no disrespect though, but none of those are geared to providing Pros quality leads. True? Review Organization should be done by the Pros, not have Job Posters organize them in a search. We know how to set job preferences as stated in Improve Targeting. Per Day Business hours doesn't affect me. Save Replies doesn't help me as I need to be personable with every customer as I've stated numerous times over.

Yes, I've been very active in the Monthly Update threads, but I don't recall applauding majority of the updates. Nor have I seen in threads anyone that suggested these changes. I've also voiced, along with other Pros, how very useful tools have been taken away from us, and giving the Job Poster more power, so how could the monthly changes be helping us?

So, a few more questions. What major changes have been made that is geared to helping the Pros? The changes Kameron listed are minor, not major. And what major changes are going to occur to help Pros? Lastly, Which pros suggested these changes that don't help provide quality leads to us?
