Check out the incredible story of Preston and Leighton, owners of Rocky Mountain Photo Booth in Salt Lake City, Utah.
They were trying to break into the events industry and didn't have much success until Thumbtack came along.
"One of the hardest parts of getting started was that we weren’t being taken seriously yet — there was no proof of professionalism, quality, or customer satisfaction. Thumbtack has helped us prove we are all of those things by facilitating customer reviews and suggesting leads to pursue. Because of this process, we can get in front of customers we want directly, instead of having to cold call and hope for the best."
(I felt the same way when I was making cakes full time. I would go to wedding shows - which are SO expensive - and then spend the next week cold calling every single person who came to the show. After I found Thumbtack, I never had to do another show or make another cold call. The jobs started coming in, and then the referrals from those jobs snowballed into so much business I couldn't even keep up!)

I love my job. I say it all the time.
I believe in what we do here - at Thumbtack, and as a Community Team. Meeting our pros, bringing them together, hearing their stories, taking part in their journey - is meaningful work. It makes it easy to work hard.
But the biggest motivator for me, to work hard --- my children. Not only do I work hard to provide a good life for them, but I am setting an example - that they can harness their talents and find work that truly fulfills them.
With Mother's Day this weekend, it gets me thinking.... Being a mom to two teenagers with crazy schedules, while working long hours and traveling, can be extremely challenging - and I wouldn't do it for just any job. I have to be very deliberate about finding time for my family, and also for myself. It doesn't have to be anything major - small moments here and there when we can find them.
I get manicures with my daughter, take her driving (she's about to get her license), go on hikes with her, visit museums, I've taken her on work trips with me, and sometimes she comes to my office for the day to hang out.
My son and I have regular movie nights, go to the park to play basketball, visit the planetarium, take the dog for walks, talk about his latest game creations, build legos, bake cookies, and he loves to come grocery shopping with me.
I make sure to schedule an annual road trip with just me and my kids every July - we all look forward to it every year. They're such great little humans.
And I make sure to set aside time for myself - I get massages, go to a movie, binge-watch Netflix, make my favorite tea and read, go for a run, cook a new food I've been wanting to try, or just go for a drive with some good music.
What tips and tricks do you have for other working moms (or dads)? What do you guys do to celebrate yourselves or give yourselves a break? How will you celebrate Mother's Day this year?
I'm going on a hike and BBQing with these crazies. I'm pretty lucky.

@DJStevie I think you could definitely leverage a saved reply in your favor! Just use your personal touch in that reply - let them know that you are interested in their job - but that you want to devote your time and attention to the job at hand and that you will get back to them as soon as you can. Express your interest, toot your own horn about being busy on another job (because you're good at what you do), politely let them know that as soon as you can, you'll get back to them, etc. It doesn't have to be a simple "I'll get back to you when you can."

@DJStevie You can use that saved reply to let the customer know you will get back to them - and then follow up with a more personal message when you are available. We can only offer solutions, but you definitely don't have to use them - however, this is a great way to get around response time and not leave customers hanging. The bottom line is, the faster you respond, the more likely you are to get the job!

@MLCC Thank you so much for this thoughtful email/post. You have come to the right place - we are here for a continued conversation and an open dialogue.
For a little more detail about how we price leads, check out this post from one of our Product Managers. Once you have read that, let me know what additional questions you have about pricing.
For pricing feedback specific to your category - if you can let us know in detail what isn't working, it is very helpful. --- i.e. How much you pay on average for a lead, how many leads you pay for before winning a job, how much a job is worth, etc. The more specific you can get, the more useful the feedback is. We know there is still a lot of work to be done fine tuning all of our categories and getting pricing right. With your partnership, we know we will get there.
Also, a quick reminder that if you do want to try setting preferences and paying automatically for leads, to get connected with more customers, you will get 20% off of those leads. So there is some incentive to try it out and see how it works for you! (I read some of your other posts and it looks like you have already tried this - but check out that article, as it has some helpful information, to make sure you are giving us all of the information we need to match you with the right jobs.)
I took a few minutes to look at your profile, and would also suggest a few enhancements, so that you can win more of those jobs. (Like adding some photos, adding reviews, and adding licensing). Check out this article about pros who improved their profiles and started winning more jobs. Customers are significantly more likely to hire you, once you've done those things.
Be sure to utilize your insights tab as well, to see how you compare to other pros in your area!
While reading this post and a couple of your other posts, it's obvious that you want to see Thumbtack work for you, and that you are here to be productive and constructive - I appreciate that so much (we all do). I can assure you that we are working on improvements right now, with our pros in mind. Keep watch here in this forum for product improvements as we roll them out. In the meantime, please keep your thoughts coming. We are here to listen.
