Since March, Covid-19 continues to challenge individuals and businesses to find new and innovative ways to connect with friends, family, and customers. Thumbtack launched this community to support our workforce by bringing people together to lean on and learn from each other during these unprecedented times. Employee Resource Groups like VAMOS, p rovides fellowship and friendship for its members who share common experiences. It’s one way to promote an inclusive work environment that fosters teamwork and collaboration.
While many things remain uncertain in the new normal that is Covid, some things remain constant like the need to connect with friends, family, and customers. And if you want to expand your customer base, there is value in knowing a second language to reach them. Being bilingual or multilingual can open doors and create opportunities not just now but throughout your career. Think of all the people you could reach—people who might typically not have access to your services and offerings—simply because you can communicate clearly and confidently in their native tongue. If you’ve never considered a second language as an advantage, take some time to think about the potential benefits. It might be a game-changer in differentiating yourself from the competition.
Other benefits? It’s fun to be able speak another language and appreciate the cultural nuances that go with it. Fluency in another language can make it easier to build rapport and trust, to become a relatable expert who can quickly understand customers’ needs and concerns. It can also expand your business base as happy customers refer new business to you.
Already fluent in more than one language? Congratulations! Make sure you’re tapping this resource and making the most of it in your career. If your language skills are rusty or you want to start learning a new language, there’s no time like now. Talk to one of our Thumbtack professionals today.

The Latinx community makes up a large portion of the Thumbtack family. My position at Thumbtack as a success consultant means that I get to interact daily with this diverse group of pros, mostly while speaking Spanish. Because Spanish is my second language, I appreciate every opportunity I get to practice. I also get to hear a lot of success stories from the Latinx community about how Thumbtack has helped them reach their dreams of owning a business a reality.
For example, the other day I spoke with Geovanny, from Guatemala. When he came to the United States he needed to find painting jobs, so he signed up with Thumbtack. He won the first lead that he ever received and was invited to paint someone’s entire home. This new client then recommended Geovanny to a family member, who subsequently hired him. Geovanny won two large contracts just from one lead on Thumbtack.
Wilian, from El Salvador, is another pro that I’ve worked with. He grew up working in gardens and taking care of trees. A few months ago he started on Thumbtack with hopes of growing his landscaping business. He thoroughly filled out his entire profile and provided many examples of past jobs as part of the Featured Projects section. Now, he’s been hired multiple times and is always staying busy.
I recently worked with Diana, a house cleaner living in Texas. She’s been on Thumbtack for a year and has already been hired over 60 times! She credits her success to her use of targeting preferences. Each service that she offers has targeting activated so that she can rank high in search results for the jobs that she wants to focus on.
In short, these three pros have had great success on Thumbtack due to:
Making the most of each lead . When you’re paying for a lead, you aren’t just paying for the opportunity to win a job. You are paying for a connection with a potentially life-long customer who can introduce you to an entire new network. Always try to make a good impression!
Focusing first on optimizing your profile . A complete profile filled with examples of your work can ensure fast growth for your business. Upload featured projects and be sure to have your non-Thumbtack customers leave you reviews to help get things rolling!
Setting up targeting preferences in a way that works for your business. It’s okay to be super specific, super broad, or even super different from one service to another. Also, don’t be afraid to adjust your preferences month to month, or week to week, depending on your business needs.
How have you used Thumbtack to ensure growth for your business? Please share your thoughts, advice, and stories in the comments below.

Speaking two languages growing up didn't seem like a big deal, all I knew was that I could understand and communicate in either language. As an adult, I'm grateful for my parents who provided an environment for me to learn and speak English and Spanish. Now more than ever, I see the benefits that come from clear and effective communication no matter the language. Today, I'd like to share a few tips on effective communication that you can implement when talking to potential customers.
Working with pros every day, I’ve noticed trends or practices some pros implement to increase their chances of getting hired on Thumbtack. First, have patience. Not all customers get back to you right away, as much as we want them to, so you have to do your part in the best way possible. Remember that you are the expert, and as such, you should provide enough information up front for potential customers and ask questions as needed.
Second, ensure that your initial response contains components similar to these:
Greet customer by name
Repeat back one job detail the customer provided
Answer their questions (i.e. most customers want to know your availability, proactively provide at least two open slots for an onsite/virtual estimate or a call)
Always end with a call to action
Your name, company name, phone number
Take time to create a couple of saved replies as this can save you time and help improve your response time. Having a great initial message and responding quickly can positively impact your chances of getting hired.
Third, have a proactive approach and follow-up with customers, especially when they have read your message. Ask customers direct and clarifying questions you may have about their project. Then wait. It may be tempting to message them until they respond, but if you communicate clearly and concisely with the customer, you may be at the forefront of their mind while they browse their options.
Always maintain your professionalism, as customers always have access to your contact information for future projects, and customers can review you on Thumbtack based on their interaction with you. Even though some pros don't win the job, some receive a 5 star review from customers just for being so attentive and helpful which only helps boost your profile more to other customers.
What are some messaging strategies that have worked for you? Please share in the comments below.

My name is Priscila, and I lead our Vamos Employee Resource Group (ERG) in our office in Salt Lake City, UT. This ERG was created as a support system for Thumbtack employees of the Latinx community and allies.
The term Latinx is gender neutral and more inclusive for those who are non-Spanish speakers such as people from Brazil, the caribbean, as well as indigenous people. An ally is any person that actively promotes and aspires to advance the culture of inclusion through intentional, positive and conscious efforts that benefit people as a whole.
Our goal, by introducing Vamos to the online community, is to provide a space for all of you to come together to connect, share, and learn from each other. We want to focus on providing helpful content and resources to start building this community, to raise awareness, and help boost personal and professional development.
We will be posting about many different topics throughout the next three months, and we would love to hear from you. Share your stories, suggestions, best practices, or just say hello in the comments! Thumbtack hears your voice, and wants you and your business to feel supported.
