Agreed. I base at a fee for 4 hours as my minimum. When I created my hourly rate I based it on my most common package... I don't want to take on 1 hour gigs that are an hour away. My price is the same for 1 to 4 hours. I've had to complain about this to thumbtack multiple times. I somehow left on my autopay for MC gigs and got charged 15 dollars for a lead on some kids birthday party that requested only 2 hours and was far away... took me a full day of complaining and talking 6 different people to get it refunded and now I am done with thumbtack until I see and improvement on this and their outrageous lead pricing scheme.

While I'm sure it's hard to figure out the pricing here's a brief teardown. First why do you hiding the potential price? it is dumb that we have to click a link if we want to see how much we are going to pay. This makes it seem as though you are trying to hide the sticker shock of what we are supposed to pay. Second the pricing is unclear. I suppose you have some algorithm or something to help you price things but honestly it would be so much simpler if you picked a specific percentage of the quote that we submit to the client. That should be the biggest factor. Another simple way to price would be to use the netflix model. You charge us subscription fees and we use your service. I'm sure there are plenty of faults you have already defined with this idea. Either way you are charging for a lead an amount that I would consider paying for a closed deal. I think differentiating between leads and contracts would be the best bet. It would probably too much trouble for you to operate as moneychanger in a venmo style but ultimately that would seem like the best way for you to demonstrate the value of the outrageous prices you are currently charging. Honestly it is a little better than craigslist but it's definitely not cost effective in the individual services area. It seemed like a better deal last year when I started using thumbtack. Now I just second guess myself everytime I think about contacting a client. Overall I am only looking for a few extra jobs so the burn rate for wasted leads is unacceptable.
