Why does this happen in Aug 2025?

Got a request from someone who needed wedding videography.

I don't do wedding videography. Thumbtack has a category for wedding videography. For some reason this person chose "Other" for videography type and the typed out "Wedding". It is August 2025. Why is Thumbtack not using AI to guide these people?

When someone types out the word "wedding", a box should pop up and say "Hi, it looks like you are looking for wedding videography. Would you like to repost in that category? You are more likely to find the pro you are looking for there."

I know I have posted the same thing at least a year ago and maybe even two years ago.

Why is Thumbtack so behind the times with using technology to make their platform better?

@STL_Shooter78 teams are currently working on improving how customers connect with the right pro, with this type of feedback top of mind. When there are updates to share, we will do so here. In the meantime, please continue to share your feedback. Thank you!

  • @DustiO As I suspected, I had made almost the exact same post in May of 2024.

You claim that teams are currently working on this issue. Why were they not aware of the problem 15 months ago?

  • I hear ya, buddy! I had "Handyman" turned on. IMHO, this is simple home improvement/repair items. Replace a switch, replace a wall lamp or ceiling fan, replace a lock set, unclog a sink or fish something out of the P-trap. Things my grandfather would just do around the house but no one wants to do these days. That's fine.

I do this because my core business functions are too volatile when introduced to Thumbtack. $18 for a fence lead who contacted six and can't afford to pay? $89 for a drywall repair lead who contacted four other pros? Other drywall headaches have been people who think I'm going to hang their drywall today. When I explain that I will fit them into my schedule as soon as possible, let's say day after tomorrow (it was my slow season). Then day after tomorrow, I'm driving to their project. I text "I'm on my way!" and get a reply "Oh, someone came yesterday to do it." Don't get me started on painting. I spent $199 on painting "leads" in one month and not a single one hired me, only one allowed me to come on site to measure for a quote. That's not a lead if I can't at least provide an offer.

    I digress.

As a "Handyman", I have received "replace a 10 foot x 9 foot glass pane in a 1850's era building". "Repair an air compressor in a commercial warehouse" "Reconnect cooling lines in the >living room< of a commercial warehouse". Oh and install tile, which I don't do, never said I'd do and have no intention of doing. All four of these were denied refunds.

  • I got a "furniture assembly" quote to build a shed. Submitted a refund after not only was it in the wrong category, but the customer cancelled his project.
    Refund denied.
I think there's a chicken that presses a "reject" button to get a piece of grain running the refunds department.
