Why?

Has anyone asked the simple question of WHY? This seems like an added layer and barrier between the contractor and client. Who benefits from this system?

Hi @Jason_Pearce, that's a fair question and one worth answering directly. Thumbtack Numbers were designed with a few specific goals in mind. First, texts sent through the system are delivered as SMS directly to the customer's phone, which is meant to improve the chances of them actually seeing and responding to your outreach. Second, keeping that initial contact on Thumbtack allows the system to automatically refund you if a customer doesn't respond to any pro within 72 hours, which is something pros have been asking for for a long time. Third, it adds a layer of privacy protection for customers, which Thumbtack has found makes them more comfortable engaging with pros.

We hear you that it feels like added friction and that's exactly the kind of feedback the product team needs. This thread is being closely monitored by them, and we have a webinar and AMA coming up soon where this can be discussed further!
