Remote IT Professionals Need a Way to Exclude Hardware-Only Leads Without Losing Remote Work

I want to raise an issue that affects remote IT professionals using Thumbtack.

Right now, there is no way to exclude hardware-only jobs like "Computer won't turn on" without also giving up legitimate remote work. As a result, remote IT providers continue to be charged for leads that cannot realistically be completed remotely.

Here are real examples I've received:

  • Customers who replaced a power supply and need someone to inspect internal wiring.
  • Computers that will not power on and require physical hardware diagnostics.
  • Customers looking for local repair shops or asking for "places and locations."
  • Network configuration jobs after I intentionally opted out of Network Support.
  • Customers who change the job after the lead is charged, turning a remote software issue into a physical repair.

The current workaround is to disable entire service categories, but that also eliminates legitimate remote jobs such as Windows repairs, malware removal, performance issues, and software troubleshooting. That is not a realistic solution for businesses that provide both remote and local services.

This is not about getting free leads. I understand that running a marketplace involves risk, and I have invested over $4,400 in Thumbtack because I believe in growing my business through the platform.

The problem is that the product does not provide IT professionals with enough control over what constitutes a valid remote lead.

I think a better solution would be allowing customers and pros to distinguish between:

  • Computer won't turn on (physical diagnosis)
  • Hardware installation or replacement
  • BIOS or firmware recovery
  • Software troubleshooting
  • Windows boot issues
  • Virus and malware removal
  • Network configuration
  • Remote-only service
  • On-site service

These are completely different types of work, yet they are often grouped together.

I'd like to hear from other IT professionals:

  • Are you also being charged for hardware jobs that cannot reasonably be completed remotely?
  • Would more granular service categories improve the quality of leads?

I hope Thumbtack's Product team sees this because I believe improving these categories would benefit both customers and professionals while reducing refund disputes and improving match quality for everyone.
