I’m in the process of starting my Residential , RV, & AirBNB/Rental cleaning, organizing, and turnover business. I definitely plan on getting my LLC down the road, but for now I’m a sole proprietor. I’m the only “employee” and I’m going to subcontract eventually. I’m pretty sure this is the slowest startup in the history of startups , it’s also a Zero dollar startup, bad credit, no loans, zero savings, no assets, but I’m not giving up yet. At the risk of sounding “totally NEW”, because I am “new” to the business, I’m definitely NOT “new” to cleaning. I’ve been cleaning my whole life with and for family and friends just not with a professional cleaning service business.
I worked as a Surgical Tech for 9 years, and at both facilities the OR staff, myself included, were all responsible for assisting with room cleaning (sanitizing/disinfecting, etc.) and turnovers (restocking linens, trash bags, OR bed kits, supplies, etc.). The OR techs also shared responsibility with the sterile processing techs of cleaning, reassembly/disassembly of instruments, and knowing all processes and solutions used for sterilizing. So, I’m certified and up to date with JCAHO and OSHA standards, Material Data Sheets, etc.I also had a very brief stewardship training under a dear friend of mine who was a bosun that worked on a private yacht that sailed 10 months out of the year. Long story short he passed away a couple of weeks before we were able to charter together, and I just couldn’t bare continuing that profession without him because he was, after all, my inspiration for that profession.
Anyways, I’m sorry for babbling on but I’m hoping you get the picture I’m trying to paint.- Residential Cleaner & Organizing- (
NO Professional Title) - 25 years - Surgical Tech - (9 yrs) - cleaning, disinfecting, sterilizing, organizing, restocking, super-fast turnover
- Stewardship Trainee - (4 weeks) - service, provisioning & inventory, cabin turndown, silver service, turnover, staging — —— LUXURY service is NEVER optional
I’m having the hardest time getting leads on Thumbtack, winning bids on Turno, and I know it’s because I “don’t have experience”, but I do!! 😭 I don’t have the time to find someone to train under I don’t have the money or the resources to go work for another cleaning business and most likely only making $10 an hour!
SIDE NOTE:
- Minimum Wage - $7.25/hr.
- Cost of Living - Single Person, No Dependents, No Benefits -They need to make $21.50/hr. just to survive with the most basic necessities.
How does that work?…. HOW IS THIS IS RIGHT?!?!
Sorry 🐿️!As I was saying I don’t have time to do something else it’s already taking forever to start my company. But honestly I feel like I have no clue what I’m even doing anymore. I hate feeling like I’m BEGGING for jobs! I’m already taking a pay cut on these platforms as it is and even my middle range bid prices aren’t good enough to win a bid. I hate haggling, I hate asking people I know cause I feel like they feel obligated but also I feel like I shouldn’t charge them cause it’s family and friends. Then I hate pricing myself because I feel like I deserve more money than the avg prices listed and at the same time I feel like I'm asking too much. It's SO FRUSTRATING and then I get discouraged because I never get picked.! Oh and let’s not forget every neighborhood that looks safe enough to work in do not allow soliciting.
I am FAR from LAZY! I’m not afraid of work, but I’m killing myself trying to find the work.
How can I get leads, clients, etc if I don’t have any “experience” and how can I get “experience” if I cant get jobs. Can anyone help me?!? Please!?? I need a miracle! I’ll take any advice I can get on ALL things cleaning, organizing, and turnovers! 🙏🙏🙏

Hi @TBAAB_2025 , first of all, thank you for sharing your story. It takes a lot of courage to put yourself out there, and I can tell how much heart you've already poured into building your business.
From everything you shared, I actually think you have more experience than you're giving yourself credit for. Your background as a Surgical Tech gave you years of experience with cleaning, sanitizing, organizing, inventory management, and fast turnarounds, all while following incredibly high standards. That's something customers value, so don't be afraid to highlight it in your Thumbtack profile and introductions.
When you're just getting started, your profile, photos, and first few reviews are what customers rely on most. If you have before-and-after photos, even from projects you've done for family or friends, those can help showcase the quality of your work. And once you book those first customers, be sure to ask them for a review. Those early reviews can make a huge difference.
One other tip is to respond to leads as quickly as you can. Customers are often reaching out to several pros at once, so a fast, personalized response can really help you stand out.
Also, you've come to the right place. 😊 We tagged a lot of experienced cleaning and organizing pros in this thread, and many of them have been exactly where you are today. I hope they'll jump in and share the lessons that helped them land their first customers, price their services confidently, and grow their businesses.
You're definitely not alone in this journey, and we're all rooting for you!
