Introduction
INTRODUCTION:
Good Evening all! I hope this finds you well.
My Name is Michael Buckley, I'm 54 years old and looking forward to creating a more predictable and successful business venture while growing and evolving myself off the truck ( = Rather than being myself the sole labor, and booking and everything else, desire to build the business into something that I can assign to others, create a residual income and eventually either sell or retire from.) Clearly I have a huge long ways to go.
BUSINESS NAME & INDUSTRY:
My Business name is "HAUL-N-STUFF llc" Although I'm considering changing it to something that more closely represents my main and current service offerings.
HISTORY:
(the Business name was thought of since started my self employed business venture with Bungii (Bungii = an Online [Uber-like] App, for large item and heavy delivery services and related services via Full Size pickup truck. I started this business venture after losing a sales job in my early 50's (age) and discovered that not many companies want to hire strong- minded and formerly highly paid individuals/ people in there 50's. (Almost as if it represents a threat to the 30-40 year old hiring managers. Fast forward the clock and Bungii (much like most Uber-like Apps, eventually cut payouts/ cut corners and made it less than reasonably profitable to make their platform a solid long term business model.
Next Fast Forward, I discovered a couple of other things that led me down the Handyman path, (since I already had a history and reputation of fixing, just about anything and everything for family, friends and loved ones, and myself of course)
My nieces and nephews would marvel at "Uncle Michael" fixing or assembling things for their Mommy's or Grandma or who ever and what ever the situation.
I found Wayfair and did independent contractor Assembly for them on over 200 jobs, and found my assigned customers would call me back time and the again for other stuff.
QUESTION:
My biggest challenge and Question is about Screening/ Hiring 1099 helper individuals/ workers for 1 time job work, or building and finding trustworthy and competent people to call on when I have something bigger than a Solo project.
I probably have 100 other questions, but Just my introduction for today.
Wishing all of you Success and Happiness!
Uncle Michael

Welcome to the Community, @Uncle_Michael ! 👋 Quite the journey from Bungii to 200+ Wayfair assembly jobs and now building HAUL-N-STUFF. The fact that customers kept coming back to you for other projects says a lot about the trust you’ve already built.
Your question about finding and vetting reliable help is a great one, especially as you work toward stepping away from doing everything yourself. I know we have pros here who have made that transition from solo operator to building a team, so I’d love to hear what worked for them when finding people they could trust.
For those who’ve built a crew, how did you find and vet your first few team members? 👇
