New Handyman Business — Advice on Getting More Jobs with a Small Budget
Hi everyone! I recently started TTR Handyman Services in the Elk Grove/Sacramento area.
Since I’m a new business, I don’t have a large advertising budget yet. I’m trying to build my customer base, get reviews, and keep my schedule busy.
For experienced Thumbtack pros: what is the best way for a new handyman to get more jobs without spending too much on leads?
I’m especially interested in discounted or lower-cost lead opportunities while I’m getting established. As the business grows, I’ll be comfortable investing more in regular-priced leads.
I’d really appreciate any advice about lead settings, pricing, budgeting, and which types of handyman jobs work best on Thumbtack.
Thank you!

Hi @nadeem44 , welcome to the Community! 👋 And congrats on getting TTR Handyman Services started!
Since you're working with a smaller budget, I'd recommend starting very intentionally with your job preferences, lead prices, and weekly budget. Focus on the handyman jobs you really want and that make financial sense for your business, then adjust as you learn which types of projects are actually converting for you.
I'd also keep an eye on your Opportunities tab. These are customers you can choose to reach out to, and you only pay if the customer responds, so there can be less risk when you're working with a limited budget.
And don't underestimate your profile while you're getting established. Strong project photos, quick and personalized responses, and consistently asking happy customers for reviews can help you build that reputation over time without simply increasing what you're willing to spend.
Would love to hear from some of our established handyman pros too. What helped you make the most of a smaller budget when you were first getting started? 🔨
