Introducing Summit Home Pros – Pittsburgh Home Services

Hi everyone! My name is Michael, and I’m the owner of Summit Home Pros, serving Pittsburgh and the surrounding areas.

Before starting my company, I was a Local 9 union member. My journey into business ownership has largely been self taught. I wanted to make a name for myself, escape the traditional 9 to 5 rat race, and build a life where my work gives me more freedom and control over my time.

I built Summit Home Pros around one simple principle: look out for the customer. I’m straightforward, provide upfront pricing with no hidden fees, and give honest recommendations instead of trying to sell people work they don’t need.

During my first year, I was hired 117 times and earned 81 customer reviews. I’m proud of that start, but I’m determined to build something even bigger and more sustainable.

My question for the community is: What helped you grow from being a busy owner-operator into a business that produces consistent leads without consuming all of your time?

I look forward to connecting with and learning from everyone here!

Hi @SummitHomePros , welcome to the Community, Michael! 👋 117 hires and 81 reviews in your first year is quite a start, especially while teaching yourself the business side along the way!

I also really like the question you're asking because it sounds like you're at that point where the challenge isn't simply getting more work, but figuring out how to grow without having every part of the business depend on you.

On the Thumbtack side, I'd recommend getting into the habit of using your Performance Dashboard to understand what's actually driving results. Keep an eye on things like your lead volume, response time, and how you're performing compared with other pros in your category. I'd also regularly review your job preferences, lead prices, budget, and availability so Thumbtack reflects the type and amount of work you actually have capacity to take on as the business grows.

And definitely take advantage of the app to stay on top of new leads and customer messages when you're away from the desk. The goal is to build a routine where you're using the data and tools available to make decisions instead of feeling like you need to constantly watch for the next lead.

Would love to hear from other pros who have made that transition from owner-operator to building a team and more scalable systems. What made the biggest difference for you?

I’ve been monitoring my Performance Dashboard and responding to leads quickly. The biggest challenge right now isn’t my capacity it’s the cost and quality of the leads. This week alone, I received eight leads and spent around $250 without booking a single job. Some customers never opened or responded to my message, and a few leads didn’t accurately match the service or availability requested. One unopened lead alone cost me approximately $85. Thumbtack is starting to feel like Uber for contractors an algorithm controls what we pay and which opportunities we receive, while the pro assumes nearly all the financial risk whether the customer is serious or not. We pay upfront, but there’s no guarantee the customer will respond, provide accurate information, or genuinely intend to hire anyone.
