Trying to set up a page...getting errors on background check

I'm trying to set up a page to provide graphic design and illustration services but I can't get through the background check. Whether I choose SSN or photo ID, I get an error. Either "severError" or "Sorry, looks like something went wrong. Please try again, or refresh the page."

Refreshing the page doesn't help. I've tried multiple browsers and that doesn't help.

@ElroyVa79 so sorry I missed this! Is it still not working?

  • Has this been resolved? I have encountered this exact same "server error" when I try to do background check. I tried a few times in last one week.

  • Yes, it's still happening.

I didn't really follow through since I discovered that I'd have to pay Thumbtack each time I needed to get a job/client through the platform. So, I was trying to decide if it was worth it, but felt I should've given a response either way. Yes, if I try to do the verification, I get the serverError message.

If you're getting an error, I would recommend reaching out to support as unfortunately I am not able to help with background checks! But, happy to help answer other questions about getting started on Thumbtack or connect you with pros in your industry!

  • It sounds like a frustrating loop, especially after trying multiple browsers and refreshes. This issue usually happens when the verification system is temporarily down or when the platform is having trouble reading the uploaded ID/SSN data on the backend, not because of anything you’re doing wrong.

A few things you can try that often fix it:

    1. Clear cache + cookies before trying again.
    2. Use a different device (phone instead of laptop, or vice versa).
    3. Disable VPN, if you're using one — it can trigger verification errors.
    4. Try mobile data instead of Wi-Fi (sometimes network filters block verification requests).
    5. Make sure your photo ID image is sharp, uncropped, and well-lit.

If none of these work, it’s most likely a server-side issue, and you’ll need to contact the platform’s support team. Provide a screenshot and the exact error message (“serverError” / “something went wrong”). They can manually reset or review your verification.

It should get resolved quickly once support steps in :)
