What’s One Simple Action a New Pro Can Take in Their First 30 Days to Win More Jobs?
The first 30 days on Thumbtack can mess with your head a little. You’re investing money, quoting jobs, watching leads come in… and sometimes watching them disappear just as fast.
You start wondering, is it my profile? My pricing? Am I just too late? Is the competition better? When things don’t convert, it’s easy to overthink everything. The good thing is, you don’t have to figure it out alone. So we asked a few Top Pros a simple question: if you had to tell a brand-new Pro to focus on just one thing in month one, what would it be?
Here’s what they said.
Tony Conz
Nearly 900 customers quoted • 70 reviews • 4x Top Pro
“Grasp the importance of follow up. This is a race, and typically the first to respond AND continue with consistent follow up until you do get in touch with them. People use Thumbtack for one reason, and one reason only, to connect with someone who can do the work they need done in their home (or whatever service you provide).
They are jumping through the hoops and filling out the form because they WANT your service! Don’t just assume it was a ‘bad lead’ because they didn’t respond the first time. Keep chasing them until you engage.”
Jason Walker
Nearly 700 customers connected • 50 reviews • 2x Top Pro
“Respond immediately and personally to every inquiry. Fast, thoughtful replies that reference the client’s project build trust and win jobs more often than competing on price.”
What Stands Out
Across different industries and experience levels, the advice is surprisingly simple. The pros who win early treat speed and follow-up like non-negotiables. They don’t wait. They don’t assume. They engage until there’s a real yes or no.
If You’re in Your First 30 Days
Don’t try to optimize everything at once. Start with this: respond quickly, make your reply personal, and follow up until you actually connect. That one discipline alone can change your results.
Now it’s your turn. If you could give a brand-new Pro one piece of advice for their first month, what would it be?
Drop it in the comments and help someone win their first job faster.

Respond ASAP, in a text message quote, explain things in detail, save it as a template, call the customer, don't wait, believe me your competition will call them, and you may lose a job. Fill out your profile in detail, add many photos, featured projects, ask for reviews. Read your profile many times, edit it, tweak it, look up other successful profiles if necessary and get some ideas. Also, get a nice review boost by allowing Thumbtack to list your Google reviews on Thumbtack, yes, you can do that, sync Thumbtack with your Google business profile, bam you get lots of reviews on Thumbtack that you didn't have before, this will add to your credibility.
Also, add your insurance info, certification or license if you have one for your trade and complete a background check - it's not a big deal, it adds trust to your profile.

@Enjoi8084 the pros tagged here are new to the Pro Community platform (not new to Thumbtack, sorry for the confusion there). The above poster has been on Thumbtack for 13 years — their advice is valuable and may help other pros find success. We ask that you please keep conversations respectful and keep in mind that everyone has different experiences and perspectives.

I ALWAYS reply very quickly, however, my response time doesn't reflect this because ONE TIME someone messaged me in the middle of the night and I didn't respond for hours (since I was asleep) and this has made my response time look slower than it is. How can I get this fixed?

@CrochetByHalliday Great question ! Response time is only calculated during business hours, from 8 AM to 8 PM. If a lead comes in after hours, the response time clock doesn't start until 8 AM the next day. 😊
Response time is also based on your overall responsiveness, so it becomes more accurate as you continue interacting with customers. From the sound of it, you're already doing exactly what many successful pros recommend by responding quickly and staying engaged with your leads.

In my experience, speed matters more than almost anything else.
I’ve found that replying in under a minute wins a lot of jobs. If I respond in 2 minutes but another pro responds in seconds, there’s a good chance the customer is already engaged with them before I even send my first message.
Many customers are contacting multiple pros at the same time and often start moving forward with the first person who responds and asks the right questions.
That’s one reason I sometimes hide my business when I know I’ll be driving, on a job site, or otherwise unable to respond quickly. I’d rather temporarily pause lead flow than pay for leads when I can’t give them immediate attention.
Fast response times don’t guarantee you’ll win the job, but slow response times definitely make it harder.

One simple action @MyCleanCharlotteMaid would recommend is responding fast and personally. For cleaning leads, customers usually want someone reliable, clear, and easy to communicate with. A quick reply with their name, the service they requested, and one next-step question can make a big difference.
I would also make sure the profile has real before/after photos, service details, and reviews because trust matters a lot in home cleaning.

Thank you for sharing, @MyCleanCharlotteMaid ! I love that you highlighted the importance of making responses personal. A quick reply definitely helps, but taking a moment to acknowledge the customer's specific project can go a long way in building trust. Thanks for sharing these helpful tips with the Community!
